Why does nobody talk about getting cliffed out on the Lost Coast at night?
Two Octobers ago I was doing the Lost Coast Trail in California and pushed past the last viable campsite near Big Flat because I thought I could make it to the next one before dark. Bad call. I hit a section where the beach turned into these loose scree slopes above the surf, and every step started sliding, so I had to backtrack by headlamp in fog with the tide coming in. I ended up wedging myself behind this big rock, waiting 40 minutes for the tide to drop, then crawling out on hands and knees. Now I check the tide chart against my actual walking pace instead of some optimistic number in my head. Anyone else have a spot where the route itself is fine but timing turns it into a trap?
