Neighbor in Cleveland told me to soak my fence boards in a kiddie pool before nailing, has anyone tried this?
Was chatting with my next door neighbor Dave over the fence line yesterday while I was tearing out some old pickets. He's been building decks and fences around Cleveland for about 22 years and swears by soaking cedar boards in a plastic kiddie pool for 3 days before nailing them up. Said it stops the splitting and the boards shrink tight around the nail heads once they dry out. I've got 14 pickets to replace this weekend and a $9 pool from Walmart sitting in my garage. Sounds a little nuts but he's never steered me wrong on anything else. Anyone here actually done the soak thing, or is he pulling my leg?
