That gate post that fought me for 3 weekends taught me more than any how-to video
I put up a new side gate back in April and figured it was a two weekend job at most, dig four holes, set some posts in quickrete, hang the thing. The first hole hit a root from the old maple that took me 90 minutes with a digging bar, and then the second hole at 30 inches deep started filling with water because the yard drains toward that corner. So I spent another weekend just moving the gate line 6 inches uphill and re-digging. Then the posts sat around a week curing and one of them ended up out of plumb by about a quarter inch, which does not sound like much until your gate scrapes the latch every single time. I finally pulled that post out, dug a wider hole, and used a 4 foot level clamped to two sides to get it dead on. Three weekends and probably $60 in extra concrete and a busted spade later, the gate swings clean. I keep walking out there just to open and shut it like a weirdo. Anybody else get humbled by a job that should have been simple?
