Warning: My $60 Backyard Shed Door Sags Because I Ignored a 2x4 Header Tip From a Guy in Tampa
I built a 10x12 shed last spring and the double doors started dragging on the frame within 3 months. A retired carpenter down in Tampa saw my build photos on a forum and pointed out I had used a single 2x6 header over the 5 foot opening instead of doubling it up. He mentioned that for any span past 4 feet you want two 2x6s sandwiched with plywood or a proper 2x8 to stop the sag. I pulled the trim, cut out the old header, and sistered in a second 2x6 with construction adhesive and 16d nails. It has been 8 months now and the doors swing free with a half inch gap at the bottom, no drag at all. Has anyone else gotten a simple pointer from a stranger that saved a whole rebuild?
