My neighbor said my coop smelled like a wet dog, so I tried something different
My next door neighbor Brenda came over about three weeks ago to drop off some tomato starts and she got about five feet from my coop and just stopped. She didn't say anything mean, but she goes, "are you keeping a wet dog out here?" I had gotten so used to the smell that I honestly didn't notice it anymore, which is kind of gross to admit. I had been using pine shavings for almost two years and just topping them off instead of doing a full clean out, so there was probably three inches of packed, damp junk at the bottom. I pulled everything out, let the floor dry for a full day, and switched to a mix of sand and coarse wood chips. It's been three weeks now and I can actually stand in there without holding my breath. How often are you all doing a full coop clean out, because I clearly was way overdue?
