Tried store-bought chick starter instead of my usual mix and lost 3 birds to pasty butt in a week

I switched to that cheap Purina bag from Tractor Supply to save $8 and the protein level was way too low for my Orpingtons (they're heavy eaters), so has anyone else noticed a difference between brands or am I just unlucky with that batch?

Yeah I had the same thing happen with that Purina bag. Lost two Wyandottes to pasty butt and the rest of the batch was just off for weeks. Switched back to my usual feed and never had the problem again.

Bet it was stored wrong that batch got cooked in the heat.

Are you sure it was the feed and not just bad luck? I've used that Purina starter before and never lost a bird to pasty butt. Seems like people blame the feed for everything these days.
