A guy at the star party in Tucson said my red flashlight was ruining everyone's night vision, and he was right
I brought a regular white headlamp to my first club meetup at Catalina State Park back in March. Thought it was fine since I mostly kept it pointed at the ground. An older guy walked over about 20 minutes in and asked me, real polite, if I could switch to red. He explained that even a quick white flash can wreck dark adaptation for 15 to 20 minutes for anyone within eyeshot, and there were about 40 of us set up in the field. I felt like a jerk. Got a $12 red LED headlamp the next week and covered the white one with tape so I can't accidentally click it on. Honestly my own eyes adjusted faster too once I made the switch. Anyone else get called out at their first star party, or was it just me?
