Appreciation post: the old guy at the Columbus store who told me to ditch the red light
Back when I was trying to see the Orion Nebula from my driveway, a guy working the counter at the camera shop on High Street told me to stop using my bright red headlamp and give my eyes a solid 20 minutes in the dark. I figured he was just old school, but I tried it the next clear night and the nebula went from a faint smudge to something I could actually make out. Turns out my light was wrecking my night vision way more than I thought. Anyone else have a piece of gear they ditched that made everything better?
