Guy at the Riverside astronomy club meeting told me to ditch my 8 inch SCT for a $60 pair of binoculars, and he might be right
I went to the Riverside club meetup at the community center 3 weeks ago and this older guy named Hal overheard me complaining about lugging my 8 inch SCT out to the driveway every clear night. He pointed at my dusty tripod and said 'you'll see more sky with a chair and a cheap pair of 10x50s than with that thing collecting dust.' At first I thought it was a gear snob line, but then it hit me: I've used that scope maybe 4 times this year because setup takes 20 minutes and I just don't bother. Meanwhile my $60 binoculars live by the back door and I've done more real observing with them in a month than the tube has seen all season. Not saying sell the scope, but I'm starting to think the best telescope is the one you actually bring outside. Anyone else here gone mostly binocular and regretted it, or is this the way?
