That ladder setup that nearly took me out last Tuesday

I was running a new drop line for a customer over on Maple Street and my telescoping ladder slid out from under me. I had it on a sloped driveway but thought the feet were gripped good enough. Next thing I know I'm sliding down the siding with the ladder tipping sideways. Scraped my arm up pretty bad and bent the ladder's locking mechanism. Had to drive 40 minutes back to the shop to grab a spare. Anyone else ever have a ladder fail on them like that in a weird spot?

Just tried standing on the bus instead of sitting. Weird result.

I always grab a seat on the 42 bus downtown. Last Tuesday I decided to stand the whole 25 minute ride. My legs felt more awake when I got off. But my back was killing me from the sudden stops and swaying. Anyone else get a different experience with standing versus sitting on a long bus ride?

Rant: stop using duct tape for everything in your house

I keep seeing posts about people fixing broken pipes or loose vents with duct tape. That stuff is not for plumbing or HVAC work. It dries out and peels off after a few months. I work nights and came home to a flooded laundry room last week because a neighbor used duct tape on a pipe joint. Use proper repair tape or call a plumber. Anyone else seen duct tape fail in a bad spot?

Overheard a dev at a coffee shop say "AI agents are just fancy autocomplete" and it got me thinking for the last 3 days straight

I was grabbing a pour-over at this spot in Austin and this guy was explaining to his friend how LLMs dont actually think, they just predict the next word really well. At first I kinda rolled my eyes but then I started looking at my own workflow. I've been using copilot for coding and it does feel like magic sometimes but when I actually pay attention, its just filling in patterns. Not really solving problems. Does that change how you guys build with AI tools or am I overthinking this?

Walked through a commissary kitchen in Austin and it changed my mind about open shelving

I always thought open shelving was just a trendy look for Instagram, but I saw this setup at a shared kitchen space on Airport Blvd where they had all their sheet pans and hotel pans out in the open. They said it saved them about 10 minutes per service because nobody was digging through cabinets. Has anyone else tried ditching closed storage in a busy kitchen?

Vent: Worst Valentine's Day week of my career so far

Last week was supposed to be my biggest week ever with 40+ orders booked. Then the wholesaler sent me roses that showed up half dead with bent necks on Monday. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday scrambling to find replacements from a backup supplier in Atlanta. Ended up refunding 8 customers $150 total because the arrangements just didn't look right. Has anyone else had a supplier totally drop the ball during a peak week like that?

Finally gave in and bought a proper laying press after years of clamping books between boards

For about 3 years I was using two thick pieces of plywood and some C-clamps to hold books while I worked on the spines. It worked okay but always slipped just enough to mess up my glue lines. Last month I dropped $200 on a used metal laying press from a guy retiring in Portland. The difference in how clean my joints come out now is night and day. Has anyone else found a tool they ignored for too long that ended up saving them tons of frustration?

Wasted $30 on a fancy garlic press that broke in a month

I got talked into buying this stainless steel garlic press at a kitchen supply store near Columbus. The guy said it would last forever and never clog up like the cheap ones. First week it worked great, no complaints. But by week three the handle started getting loose, and by week four it just snapped right off when I was pressing a single clove. So I went back to my old method of smashing garlic with the flat side of a knife. Costs nothing, takes ten seconds, and I never have to clean a gadget that traps garlic bits in every little hole. Has anyone else fallen for a kitchen tool that sounded good but ended up being a waste?

My uncle's "just throw everything in a pan" advice finally backfired on me

So last Tuesday I posted a pic of my fridge with half a bag of frozen peas, some sad celery, a block of cream cheese, and some leftover rotini. My uncle Bob (who thinks he's a chef because he can grill burgers) commented "just saute it all together with garlic and call it dinner." I figured why not, I had nothing else to lose. Twenty minutes later I had this weird mushy paste that tasted like regret and freezer burn. I ended up ordering a $16 pizza instead. Has anyone else had a family member give you totally useless fridge advice that seemed good at the time?
