Hot take: phone apps for star tracking are overrated

I used to think those sky map phone apps were the best thing for backyard stargazing, but after using just a printed star wheel for the last 3 months, I got way better at finding things on my own. The app did too much of the work and I never learned the actual sky patterns. Anyone else ditch the tech and go back to paper?

Do you feel like you actually remember where things are better now? I switched to paper charts too and it made a huge difference in learning the sky.

@janab82 yeah but what really sold me was when I started using a red light headlamp with the paper charts. did you have to learn to switch between the map and the sky constantly at first or did it just click for you?
