I swapped my red flashlight for a dimmable headlamp and it changed everything
I used to fumble around the backyard with one of those cheap red LED flashlights from the hardware store. It worked okay for keeping my night vision, but I'd always have it clamped under my chin or in my teeth while I tried to adjust my telescope or look at a star chart. About 3 months ago I finally picked up a dimmable headlamp with a red setting from a camping gear swap for like 12 bucks. Now I can keep both hands free to tweak the focus knob on my Dobsonian or jot down notes on my phone without dropping anything. The built-in red light is way less harsh too, so I don't accidentally blast my eyes when I look up at the sky. Has anyone else made the switch from a handheld light to a hands-free setup for night observing?

Funny how once you free up your hands, you start wondering why you ever put up with the old way. Makes you question what other little frustrations you've been just living with.

But isn't that kind of a dangerous way to think though?
