I used to plan my whole night around one object, now I just let the sky guide me
For years, I would pick a single target, like the Orion Nebula, and spend hours trying to find it and get a good look, even if the seeing was bad or the moon was bright. My whole session was a success or failure based on that one thing. It got frustrating, especially with my old 6-inch Dobsonian that was tough to point exactly where I wanted. Then, about two summers ago, I just gave up on that plan one clear night. I sat in my lawn chair in the backyard and just looked up. I ended up following the Summer Triangle, watching satellites, and even caught a decent meteor. Now I almost never have a set target. I just go out, let my eyes adjust, and see what looks good that night. It's way more relaxing and I feel like I actually see more. Has anyone else made this switch from strict planning to just going with the flow?
