My neighbor swears a red flashlight saved his night vision, I think it's mostly hype
I was out back in Fort Collins two weeks ago lining up my 8 inch dob when my neighbor Rick walked over with a red headlamp and said, "you lose your dark adaptation in seconds with white light, but red keeps your pupils open." I told him I've flipped on my phone in white mode for years and still spot the Orion Nebula fine, and he just laughed. Now I'm torn: is red light really protecting my eyes, or do people just like feeling official with the gear? Anyone here tested this side by side with a star chart and a stopwatch?
