Serious question, did you know the Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years away and still visible with your bare eyes?
Got a cheap planisphere at a garage sale in Sandusky last month and it had a little fact sheet tucked in the sleeve. It said Andromeda is the farthest thing you can see without a telescope, about 2.5 million light years out. I always figured a galaxy needed binoculars at least, so I went out back on a clear night and just stared at the patch above the handle of the Big Dipper until my eyes adjusted. Took about 15 minutes for it to show up as a faint smudge, but there it was. Same sheet said a dark yard matters more than a big scope, and that matched what I saw. So now I'm wondering, what's the farthest thing anyone here has spotted with just their eyes from their own yard?
