Went from seeing 4 stars over my garage to counting 40 after I finally killed the yard light
Two years ago I could stand in my driveway in Fort Collins and see maybe four stars on a decent night, and I honestly thought that was just how it was living in town. Then last spring my neighbor's back porch light burned out and they never replaced it, and the difference in my own yard was wild. That got me thinking so I put a piece of tape over my own motion light sensor and switched the garage bulb to a warm dim one, took about 20 minutes and cost nothing. Within a couple nights I was picking out the Little Dipper with my bare eyes, which I had never done from home before. Now I keep a cheap folding chair out back and count what I can spot, and last Tuesday I got to about 40 before the streetlight down the block washed everything out. The moon phases matter too, I skip the nights around the full moon now because it just flattens the sky. Curious if folks here have had luck asking the city to shield a streetlight, or if that is a waste of a phone call.
