Tbh my sister told me to stop overmixing muffin batter and I ruined 2 batches before I listened

She kept saying 'just fold it til it comes together' but I thought she was being dramatic. After the second batch came out like hockey pucks I finally tried her way and they were perfect. Has anyone else had a family member give advice that felt wrong but actually saved your bake?

Have you tried adding a little sour cream to your batter... I find it helps keep things soft when you're still learning the folding thing? My grandma told me to count my folds at first, like no more than 10 or 12 turns with the spatula before stopping. She was right, I was way too aggressive mixing in the berries and ended up with purple batter and dense muffins every time.

Oh did you try the sour cream trick yet? Seriously, that was a game changer for me too. I used to have the same problem with my blueberry muffins turning into a weird purple mess because I'd just keep mixing and mixing. My mom finally sat me down and said "stop acting like you're making bread dough" and made me count my folds out loud with her. Now I literally stop at 10 folds even if it still looks lumpy. The lumps bake out anyway, I promise. Also if you're using frozen berries toss them in a little flour first before folding, it keeps them from sinking to the bottom and making that awful gummy layer under the muffin.
