Just learned a stand mixer can burn out if you run it past speed 6 with stiff dough, and my 3 year old one is now making a weird smell
Saw this in the manual that came with my KitchenAid after my dough hook started clunking on a double batch of bagels. Turns out the manual literally says not to go past speed 2 for heavy dough, which I have been ignoring for like 3 years. Anyone else cook their mixer this way, and did it come back from the smell or was it toast?
Did you let it cool down and run it empty for a few minutes to see if the smell fades? That burnt smell is usually the motor windings or the grease getting hot, and a lot of times it survives if you caught it early. The clunking is the bigger worry though, that's probably the gears starting to strip from the double batches. Try running it on speed 2 for 10 minutes with nothing in the bowl and see if it still smells or sounds rough.
