Just realized my oven runs 25 degrees hot after 3 years of dry cakes

I was watching a baking stream last week and the host mentioned her oven temp was off. So I grabbed a $7 oven thermometer from the grocery store and tested mine. Turns out my 350 degree setting is actually 375 degrees. All those dry sponge cakes and burned cookie bottoms finally make sense. Anyone else ever find a huge temp difference after finally checking?

My aunt had the exact same problem with her old white kenmore from the 90s. She baked for years wondering why her cookies always spread out flat and thin. Finally I brought over my thermometer after complaining about my own oven. Hers was running 50 degrees cold. 350 was actually 300. So she had been undercooking everything and just thought she was bad at baking. The fix was simple too, she just started adding 50 degrees to whatever the recipe said. Now her cookies come out perfect every time. It really is amazing how long people will blame themselves before checking the actual equipment.

Is it really that deep though? Just buy an oven thermometer and move on.
