My grandma watched me put a cup of salt in the cookies instead of sugar and just said 'well, someone's getting a surprise'
This happened at her house in Dayton last Christmas, and now I triple-check every bag before I pour anything into the mixer... has anyone else ever mixed up two white powders with disastrous results?

Bet your grandma enjoyed that little kitchen experiment. Salt cookies sound like a great way to ruin a party. I once grabbed cornstarch instead of powdered sugar for a frosting. It looked perfect, then tasted like chalky glue. That's a mistake you only make once. Now I'm paranoid and taste-test every ingredient like a weirdo before it goes in the bowl.

Oh man, I actually disagree with @reese_anderson43 about tasting everything! That seems like a lot of extra work. I just keep my baking soda and powdered sugar on totally different shelves. One time my friend grabbed my container of flour, but it was actually the pancake mix I'd put in there. The pancakes were so sweet they were basically cake. It was a happy accident! A little organization saves you from the taste tests.

Yeah that flour and pancake mix swap is a classic. Got a buddy who keeps his cornmeal in an old oatmeal container. Made some real interesting cornbread once. Clear labels are the real hero, a sharpie on some masking tape saves so many headaches. Even just a quick line on the lid with a marker beats guessing every time.
