I finally stopped overpaying for used tools at yard sales
A guy at a swap meet in Des Moines told me I was buying way too high on rusty wrenches. He said he never pays more than $2 for any hand tool and walks away if the seller won't budge. I used to drop $5 or $10 on worn out stuff because I thought it was a deal. Now I stick to his rule and my toolbox is fuller for half the cost. Anyone else get roasted by a stranger and change their approach?

Oh man, that guy in Des Moines sounds like a legend (honestly, I bet he has a whole system). Used to be I'd see a brand name on a rusty wrench and just throw money at it, thinking "well, it's Craftsman so it's worth $8 easy." Total fool's game. Your buddy's rule makes so much sense though, it's like a lightbulb went off. Now I take a deep breath and walk away if they won't take $2, and somehow the deals find me. It's wild how a stranger can just drop a truth bomb and change your whole game like that.

Buddy of mine got burned bad on a "vintage" toolbox once, thought he was getting a Snap-on chest for $50 and it turned out to be a cheap sticker job. Man, he still gets tight-lipped if you bring up Des Moines.
