That $5 VHS player from Goodwill actually fixed my old tapes

I grabbed a dusty Panasonic VHS combo unit for $5 at the Goodwill off of Route 9 last Saturday, mostly as a joke. Plugged it in and it ate my first tape, but after I cleaned the heads with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, it played perfectly. It even rewound faster than my old one from 1998. Anyone else had luck reviving dead tech from the thrift store instead of tossing it? What's the weirdest thing you've made work again?

Oh yeah, the q-tip trick saves half the VCRs people throw away.
