My brisket bark went from dark to dust in 5 weeks, here's what changed

I run a WSM 18 and always got that nice dark mahogany bark people chase. Then I switched to a different brand of lump charcoal, same wood chunks, same temps. Five weeks later my bark is coming out looking like gray ash and tastes bitter. Turns out this new brand uses a lot of mesquite dust in the blend, even though the bag says oak. I caught it when I dumped a fresh bag and saw all this fine powder at the bottom. Anyone else hit a sudden bark quality drop after switching fuel sources? What charcoal brand are you using that keeps the bark dark?
