Just realized why my brake bleeds kept feeling spongy after a pad swap

A retired shop guy in Portland mentioned over coffee that he pumps the lever 5 or 6 times with the cap off before topping the reservoir, and that little burp at the top fixed my mushy front brake on the first try. Anyone else got a small step like that they do without thinking about it?
