Ran out of Park Tool PPL-1 last month, used wheel bearing grease on a BB and it's still smooth
For like 6 years I used nothing but Park Tool PPL-1 on every bottom bracket and hub I touched. Ran out mid-build last month with a customer waiting on a Tuesday, so I grabbed a tub of Valvoline wheel bearing grease off the bench and packed it in. That bike has done about 400 miles since, no creaks, no play, spins fine. Now I'm wondering how much of this polylube thing is just the label, anyone else running plain auto grease in hubs long term?
Kept in mind that PPL-1 and most wheel bearing greases are both lithium based, so the switch isn't as wild as it sounds. The real gap shows up in wet or salty riding, where the cheap stuff can wash out or break down sooner than poly. 400 dry miles won't tell you much either way, so keep an eye on it after a sloppy season.
