Rant: I finally stopped greasing spoke nipples by hand after 12 years and I feel dumb
For years I did it the slow way. Dab of grease on my finger, spin the nipple, wipe the excess, on to the next one. A 36 hole wheel would eat 20 minutes of my life before I even got to tensioning. Last month a guy named Dale who runs a shop over in Lorain showed me his trick. He pokes the nipples into a block of foam poked with holes, sprays them down with a little chain lube, and lets them sit while he laces the wheel. By the time the wheel is laced the threads are coated and he just wipes the rim once at the end. Did a 32 hole 3 cross after that and it took me 4 minutes flat. Now I keep a foam block and a can of lube on the bench and I cant believe I wasted a decade on the finger method. Anybody got a better way to do this? Or am I the last mechanic in Ohio to figure this out?
