Truing stand on a balcony in Denver got me to finally trust the dial indicator

I was fixing up a used wheelset for a friend on my 4th floor balcony and the wind kept rattling my cheap stand, so I grabbed a caliper from my toolbox and realized the rim was waving way more than the gauge showed, has anyone else just skipped the stand and measured straight off the fork?
