Update: I cracked a customer's carbon steerer last week because I trusted my torque wrench's click
Last Tuesday a guy dropped off a used Trek Domane for a stem swap and I grabbed my 3 year old click type torque wrench off the bench without a second thought. Set it to 5 Nm like the cap said, felt the click, and heard a small crunch right after. Pulled the stem off and there was a hairline crack running around the steerer, and the wrench was still reading 5 when I checked it against our shop's beam tester, which said it was really hitting close to 9. Turns out I had dropped that wrench on the floor back in March and never got it checked, and a couple of the other guys here did the same thing with theirs. The shop ate $340 for a new fork and the customer was cool about it, but I felt sick over it. If you are running click wrenches, put them on a tester or send them out at least once a year, especially on carbon. Anyone got a brand of beam or digital wrench they actually trust for low torque stuff?
