I finally admitted my DIY deck was a failure after 3 summers

Last August in Boise, I stood on my back porch with a beer and watched the boards I'd installed myself start to warp and split. I'd spent $1,400 on cedar and two weekends building it, and I kept telling everyone it was fine. Then my buddy Jim walked over, stepped on a soft spot, and said, "man, this thing is gonna eat an ankle someday." That was the moment I stopped defending it and started planning to tear it down. I hired a real crew to rebuild it with composite and proper footings, and it cost me double what I'd spent the first time. The dumb part is I knew I was over my head when I started, I just didn't want to admit it. Has anyone else sunk money into a project they knew was doomed from day one?
