My mechanic swore by engine flushes and I called it a scam for $89, then my truck hit 240k miles
So back in 2019 my mechanic Dave in Reno kept pushing this $89 engine flush every oil change and I flat out refused. I figured it was just a way to pad the bill, right? Fast forward to last month, my F-150 threw a rod at 240,000 miles while my buddy's identical truck with the same engine is still running strong at 315,000 miles. The only difference? He got the flush every single time for 8 years straight. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I threw away a $9,000 truck over $89 twice a year. But on the other side, my cousin is a diesel tech and he says flushes on high mileage engines can loosen sludge and kill them faster. So which is it? Are flushes legit maintenance or a shop upsell that only works in hindsight? Has anybody here actually had one save or wreck an engine?
