My neighbor Donna changed how I watch slow shows

Last Tuesday I was complaining to my neighbor Donna about how The Leftovers was too slow and I almost quit. She said "you're watching it like it's a race, not a feeling." She told me to watch one episode a night with no phone in my hand. I tried it and by episode 4 I was hooked on every quiet moment. Has anyone else had someone tell them to change how they watch a show?

That whole "it's like a race not a feeling" thing Donna said is spot on. @robert_smith36 you mentioning it felt like meditation is the exact word too, I think that's why people bounce off slow shows, they're not ready to just sit and breathe with the thing.

oh man that Donna sounds like she gets it. my buddy Mike did something similar to me like five years ago with The Wire. i was on my third attempt to get through season one cause everyone said it was the best show ever but i kept zoning out on my laptop while also checking twitter. he literally took my phone out of my hand and made me sit on the couch with just the tv and a beer. by the time we got to the end of season two i was crying over a scene with some kids and a dead body and he just looked at me like "told you so." now i do that with anything slow like Better Call Saul or even some movies. feels like meditation almost.
