Tbh, I paused my way out of the show's big surprise
I was binge-watching this cool spy series last weekend, and I got way too curious. Honestly, I kept hitting pause to look up character backgrounds on my phone. Ngl, it totally messed up the flow and I missed how scenes connected. By episode five, I had already guessed the main betrayal from all my digging. Honestly, the finale fell flat because I took away my own shock. The whole point was the slow build, but I rushed through with extra info. Now I know to just let the episodes play without stopping. It's a dumb mistake I won't make again.

What drove the need to check fan theories so often?

Ugh, it's that fear of missing out on some hidden detail for me. Like @hannahdixon said, it spoils the story, but what if everyone else is seeing something you're not? You get scared your own view of the book or show is wrong. So you keep checking to see if you're "getting it" right, and that just makes the whole thing a chore.

Had the exact same problem with a book series last month. I kept flipping to the wiki page after every chapter to check fan theories. It completely spoiled the big twist in the third book. I knew who the killer was before the main character did. Felt so stupid for not just letting the story unfold. Now I avoid all extra info until I finish the thing.
