Broke my favorite hammer handle on a Saturday morning and had to improvise

I was out in the shop in my backyard around 9 AM two weekends ago, just trying to rough out a basic leaf shape on some 1/4 inch mild steel. On the third hit, the handle on my old 2 pound cross peen just snapped clean off at the eye. No warning, no crack beforehand, just a loud pop and suddenly I'm holding a stick. I spent the next hour digging through scrap wood and found an old oak broom handle that was close enough. Shaped it down with a rasp and wedged it in there tight, and honestly it feels better than the original handle did. Has anyone else had to make a handle from something weird in a pinch?

Nothing like a surprise trust exercise with a flying hammer head.

Wait... were you the one throwing or the one catching? Because I've seen people do that "trust exercise" thing with framing hammers and it never ends well... Someone at my old shop tried that and ended up with a chipped tooth and a dent in their pride.
