I visited the old steel mill museum in Bethlehem PA and the sheer size of their forging hammers blew my mind.

Did they talk about the noise those things must have made?

That's a great point. I wonder if the noise was part of the intended effect, to scare people. They never seem to mention that in documentaries.

mark723 is onto something. The sound must have been terrifying, like nothing people had ever heard before. Documentaries skip it because they focus on the look, not the full experience. Can you imagine living near one and hearing that roar every day? They used fear as a tool, and noise was a huge part of that.
