Just realized I've been quenching my 1084 blades in warm water for two months
I was reading through an old heat treating thread last night and saw a guy mention that 1084 needs fast oil, not water, and I felt sick to my stomach. I checked my quench tank and sure enough, there was a rust ring about 2 inches up the side from where I'd been dunking them in water I kept around 130 degrees. That explains the three blades I snapped during testing and the weird soft spots on the edge of a hunter I gave to my brother in law. I always assumed the cracks were from my grinding being too thin near the edge. Has anyone else mixed up their quench mediums like this, or am I the only one who missed something that basic?
