Nailed my first forge weld after a week of failures

Was out in the shop in Tulsa last Tuesday, trying to get a simple scarf joint to stick on a fire poker, and the billet just kept peeling apart at the weld line. Took me 5 tries before I realized I was rushing the flux and not letting it soak hot enough before bringing the hammer down - has anyone else found that waiting an extra 30 seconds in the forge makes or breaks a weld?

Yeah, that extra soak time is huge. I learned the hard way too, my first good weld only happened after I started counting to a full minute in the fire.

Sounds a bit dramatic.
