Pro tip: an old smith in Scranton laughed at my quench tank and I'm still salty he was right
Two months back I built a 4 gallon quench tank out of a scrap 30 inch pipe, and a guy named Walt at a hammer-in in Scranton looked at it and said I'd get soft spots because the volume was too small for 5160 blade stock. I brushed him off since I'd done maybe 15 blades that way with no cracks. Third blade after that conversation, a camp knife, came out with a hard spine and a soft edge right where the tip section sat close to the wall of the pipe. Swapped to a 12 gallon drum and the next six blades tested dead even along the edge. Anyone else get humbled by a volume rule they thought was overkill?
