Pro tip: drawing out my hammer eye punch on the grinder instead of the anvil cut my blank waste in half
I was burning through 2 feet of 4140 a week until a guy at the Madison forge meet told me to mark the punch profile with a grinder before drifting, and that one change alone saved me about $40 a month in bar stock.
Yeah that trick changed my whole setup too. I used to just eyeball the punch and end up with a fat slug of wasted steel every time, then I started hitting the profile with a cutoff wheel first and my drop pile got way smaller. Went from tossing maybe a foot of 5160 a week to almost nothing. The old guys at the meets really do know their stuff, they've made every mistake twice already. Once you see how much cleaner the drift goes when the metal's already shaped close, you never go back. Cheap fix, big payoff.
