Serious question, has anyone else had a propane forge just quit on a big project?

Mine cut out halfway through a commissioned Damascus billet last Tuesday, right at the critical weld stage. The regulator froze solid in my 40-degree shop, and I lost the whole piece. What do you all do to keep your gas flowing when it's cold?

Man, that's brutal. Happened to me last winter trying to heat-treat a big blade. I ended up wrapping my regulator with an old heat blanket from the forge.

Seems like a lot of fuss for a regulator. Mine sits out in an unheated shed year round and I've never had a freeze up, even during those deep cold spells. Maybe it's more about the specific regulator design or moisture in the gas line itself. A blanket just sounds like it would make a damp problem worse.

My regulator froze up last January during a cold snap, just like you mentioned kim.ben. I keep a small ceramic space heater pointed at my propane tank and regulator now, set on low, whenever the shop temp drops below 40. That constant gentle heat works better than wrapping it for me, since the blanket can trap moisture. What kind of blanket did you use, the kaowool type or something else?
