My big mistake buying bulk rice in a humid climate

I live in Houston and thought I'd save big by getting a 50 pound bag of rice from the restaurant supply store. It was only $28 compared to the $1.50 per pound bags at the grocery. But after about 3 weeks, I opened the bin and found little weevils crawling all over the top layer. I tried freezing a portion but the damage was done and I ended up throwing almost 40 pounds of rice in the trash. Has anyone else tried storing bulk grains in a place with high humidity and actually had it work out?

Hollow door patch job ran me 6 hours, should have been 30 minutes. What's your worst time sink?

I mean, I was patching a hollow core door from a doorknob hole and figured it would be quick. Somehow the mesh tape kept tearing and I ended up mixing mud three times before it looked right. Has anyone else found a faster way to do these little patches without it taking all day?

Just realized my desk lamp was pointing at my monitor this whole time

Was doing a late night gaming session last Tuesday and my eyes felt like sandpaper. Kept wondering why my screen looked washed out. Then I noticed my lamp arm was angled right at the monitor creating glare. Moved it to point at the wall behind and boom everything looks way better. Anyone else deal with weird lighting issues they didn't notice for months?

Overheard a client say they only pay freelance rates if they can 'see the value'

I was at a coffee shop in Austin last week and heard some marketing director brag about how they beat down a graphic designer from $75 to $30 an hour because the designer didn't 'sell their process.' That mindset is exactly why half us spend more time justifying our prices than actually working. How do you guys shut down the 'prove your worth' nonsense before it starts?

Had a primal slip off the hook in front of a customer last Saturday

I was breaking down a half beef at the shop in Omaha and the hindquarter just slid right off the gambrel, landed on the floor with a thud. Customer watched the whole thing, laughed, and said 'guess that's why you don't work in an office'. How do you guys keep your gambrel hooks from losing grip on heavy primals?

Noticed a ton of people replacing alternators when it's just a bad ground

I was helping a buddy with his 2010 F-150 that kept dying on him, turns out the ground strap from the engine block to the frame was completely corroded and loose. Three different shops quoted him for a new alternator and battery before I took a look. Has anyone else seen this get missed more often than it should?

Why does nobody talk about how AI customer service bots actually create more work for humans?

I spent 45 minutes last week stuck in a loop with a chatbot that couldn't understand I wanted a replacement part, not a refund, and then it handed me off to a human who had to start from scratch anyway - so which side of this debate are you on, the efficiency boost or the hidden labor cost of training and fixing these systems?

Carpet seam tape from the 90s vs today, total difference

I was pulling up old carpet at a church in Akron last week and the seam tape from 1994 was STILL holding better than some of the new stuff I used on a job Tuesday. Has anyone else noticed the adhesive formula changed way more than we talk about?

Just broke down a whole hog in under 45 minutes for the first time

I've been working at Miller's Meats for about 8 months now, and my usual time was always around an hour. I finally got the flow right with my Victorinox boning knife and a fresh steel, and the clock stopped at 44 minutes. It felt like everything just clicked, from the shoulder separation to the ham removal. Has anyone else hit a personal speed record that surprised them?

Serious question, heard a pitmaster in Memphis say they never wrap their ribs

I was watching a video from a guy at a joint called Payne's Bar-B-Q, and he said wrapping ribs in foil just steams them and ruins the bark. He said he cooks his ribs straight through for 6 hours, no wrap, no spritz. It made me question my whole 3-2-1 method. Has anyone else tried a full no-wrap cook on spare ribs?
