Tried quenching in used motor oil, got a finish I actually like

Quenched a small 1084 blade in some old 10W-30 last week and the scale came off way cleaner than my usual canola setup. So I ran a second one in veggie oil right after, same steel, same heat, and it came out blotchy and dull. Anyone know if the detergents in used oil are doing something here, or is it just the viscosity?
