My game group in Austin fell apart over a single rule in Twilight Imperium

We had planned this all day session for months, but Mark spent 45 minutes arguing about the combat phase. He said the rulebook was wrong and his house rule was better, which killed the mood for everyone. By the end, three people left early and we never finished the game. Has anyone else had a group break up over something that small?

Seriously? Over one rule? Sounds like there were bigger problems if that's all it took.

adam's right that one rule fight is a symptom. But the real killer is how it kills trust. If someone argues their house rule is better than the rulebook for 45 minutes, they're not playing the same game anymore. It makes you question every future move they make. Are they bending other rules? The game falls apart because the social contract is broken, not the rule itself.

Yeah exactly, it's not about the rule itself at all. That 45 minute argument just shows they care more about being right than having fun together. Once you see that, you can't unsee it, and the whole vibe is just gone.
