I finally heard both sides on hydro testing a new boiler vs just running it, and now I'm stuck
I was at the supply house in Gary last Tuesday and heard two guys going at it over hydro testing a new build before first fire. One guy said he always does it at 1.5 times the design pressure, holds it 30 minutes, and won't sign off on a joint he hasn't seen sweat. The other guy said if it's a package unit from the shop and passes the manufacturer's test, you're just wasting a day and 200 gallons of water. I've only got 3 years in the trade, so I stayed quiet and just listened. My gut says test it anyway because a leak at 400 psi in the field is a bad day, but I get the other side too. What do you all do on a brand new drum, test or trust the paperwork?
