Pro tip: the tube roller I learned on in 2007 versus what the new guys get handed now
When I started in the trade back in 2007, the first thing the old hand at our shop in Gary showed me was how to roll a tube by feel, watching the rollers bite and listening for the sound to change. We had one old hand pump roller for the whole crew, and if you overcooked a tube you were cutting it out and doing it again while everybody watched. Fast forward to last Tuesday, a first year apprentice walked in with a cordless roller that has a digital torque readout and shuts off when it hits the set number. He knocked out a whole preheater bundle in about an hour and a half and every tube was dead on. I am not saying it is worse, the fit and finish off that thing was cleaner than anything I did at his age. It just hit me that a skill I bled for is now a setting on a screen. Any of you guys still roll by feel on the old hand pumps, or has everybody gone cordless?
