Rant: That time a bad weld nearly cost me a finger at the refinery
Was working up at the BP plant in Whiting last month... fresh out the gate, my side grinder caught a burr on a 6-inch pipe seam. The wheel grabbed and kicked back so hard it tore a gash in my glove, missed my thumb by half an inch. Had to stop, re-dress the wheel, and slow way down on the finish passes. Anyone else ever get bit by a grinder when you're in a rush?

That grinder kickback is something you never forget once it happens to you. A lot of guys don't realize that a wheel that's loaded up or glazed over is way more likely to grab and kick like that. Taking two minutes to dress the wheel before you start that finish pass saves a whole lot more than two minutes if you end up in the ER. Sometimes the real safety lesson isn't about the big obvious stuff, it's about learning to feel when your tool is telling you it's not ready to work right.

Is dressing the wheel really that critical or is it more about technique? I've seen guys run glazed wheels for years without a single bite. The real problem is people letting the wheel do the work instead of controlling the speed and pressure themselves. A good operator can manage a loaded wheel fine, dressing just wastes material and time. Plus, you ever notice how some shops dress every five minutes and still have grabs? Maybe it's not the wheel, maybe it's the grip or the stance.
