Remember when we used to just slap on a weld cap and call it good?

About five years back, an old hand from the Philly yards saw me grinding without a full face shield. He just said, 'Kid, your eyes aren't replaceable.' I felt dumb, but he was right. I switched to a 3M Speedglas right after that. Now I won't even tack without it. What's the one piece of safety gear you guys won't work without anymore?

Gotta be honest, sometimes it feels like overkill. Like, we all know the risks, but come on, a full face shield just to tack something real quick? The old timers did just fine for decades with way less. Not saying to be stupid, but maybe the safety stuff has gone a bit overboard.

Take it from someone who's been on a roof for twenty years - that quick tack job is exactly when accidents happen, because you're rushing and not thinking straight. Get a cheap face shield, keep it hanging on your belt, and you'll actually use it without thinking twice. Your eyes are worth the extra two seconds it takes to flip it down.

Honestly, those old timers also had a lot more missing fingers and eye injuries.
