That old-timer's trick for checking a boiler's water level with a flashlight actually works
I always thought it was just superstition until my sight glass was completely fogged on a job in Tacoma and I had no other way to verify. Has anyone else had to use a backup method like that in a pinch?

Yeah, the flashlight trick is basically a poor man's fiber optic scope. It works because the water level changes how the light scatters inside the glass. I've used it on old steam systems where the glass was so stained you couldn't see through it at all.

It's like that with a lot of old mechanical fixes. My grandpa would use a playing card to find a leak in a tire by listening for the hiss. Those simple workarounds, using what you have on hand, feel like a lost skill now that we just order a new part online.
