The old foreman who said my blue tape was a crutch

Back in 2017 at a fab shop near Gary, that foreman watched me lay out a full day's work with painter's tape and said, 'You'll never trust your eye if you keep leaning on that,' and honestly, after he made me do my next three fittings without it, I still think he was wrong because speed matters more than pride, so has anyone else had a senior guy push back on basic layout tricks that actually worked for them?
