Three book club meetings to finish one chapter, what a slog

Honestly, our group picked a dense history book about the Erie Canal and I figured we'd breeze through two chapters a week. Nope, we spent three full meetings just on the first chapter because everyone kept circling back to the same map and arguing about tonnage numbers. It took us 6 weeks total to get through 40 pages, and I was ready to quit until someone finally brought in a simple timeline printout. That visual reset the whole debate and made me see that we needed structure, not more opinions. Has anyone else had a book stall out because the group couldn't agree on basic facts?
