We debated it for 3 hours last Tuesday and everyone called it predictable fluff, but that chapter where Nora finally chooses her own life hit me so hard I cried twice, has anyone else felt like a book the group trashed actually saved your brain for a bit?

The librarian who told me to skip the discussion questions - she was right

Last month at our book club meetup, the librarian who runs our group said we should stop using those printed discussion guides from the publisher. I thought she was crazy at first because I love having structured questions to fall back on. But she pointed out that those questions often make everyone give the same boring answers (like what was the author's intention here) and kill real conversation. So for our last book, which was The House in the Cerulean Sea, I decided to try her approach and just let people talk about whatever stood out to them. It was honestly the best discussion we have had in 2 years. People brought up things I never even noticed in the book and we ended up talking for 45 minutes past our normal end time. Has anyone else ditched the official questions and just let the conversation go where it wants?

Unpopular opinion: hitting 50 books in a year is way too easy if you pick short ones

I crushed 52 books last year but half were under 200 pages, and I feel like a fraud telling people I read "50 books" lol. Does anyone else feel like book count goals just make you hunt for quick reads instead of good ones?

I spent 3 years in a fiction only group and swore nonfiction would be dull as dirt. Then my coworker Dave invited me to his local history book club in Albany last month where they debated a book about the Erie Canal and people were actually yelling about lock systems. Thought the 500 page sci-fi novel was overhyped, now I get it.

My book club picked this huge space opera last month and I nearly skipped the meeting because I was so bored after the first 50 pages. The world building felt like work, not fun, you know? But then around chapter 12 something clicked and I couldn't put it down. I stayed up till 3am on a Tuesday finishing the last 200 pages. Ended up being the best discussion we've had in 6 months because everyone had different theories. Has anyone else had a book that started slow but totally won you over? Turned out I accidentally bought the abridged version instead of the full novel, so I missed all the subplots. For like 3 years I thought I had to finish every single book before our monthly meeting at the downtown library. Then one night I showed up having only read 50 pages of a 400 page novel and our host just laughed and said most people skim or skip sections. Book club member told me my pacing was off and I cut 3 full scenes

Last month at my local book club in Austin, someone finally said what I'd been dreading: "Your middle chapters drag so bad I almost skipped them." I went back and looked at the word count on those 3 scenes she meant. Each one was over 1,200 words of just description and inner thoughts. I cut them down to 400 words total and moved the key plot points into other chapters. The whole manuscript dropped from 78k to 74k words and reads way faster now. Has anyone else had to kill scenes you loved just to fix the flow?

Used to speed through chapter summaries on Wikipedia before book club meetings now I just read the first and last 50 pages

Got caught three years ago when someone asked about a character that only appeared in the middle of the book. Had to fake my way through a whole 20 minute discussion about 'The Goldfinch' and it was miserable. Now I do the 50 page trick and it works way better. Has anyone else found a lazy method that actually helps you contribute to the conversation?

I was browsing the classics section last Tuesday when this dude in a beret starts telling me Gatsby is actually a comedy because of the car scene timing. He quoted the green light as a punchline and got mad when I laughed. Has anyone else run into someone who thinks a tragedy is just a joke with bad pacing?

Picked 'The Name of the Wind' over 'The Way of Kings' for our fantasy month

Honestly, I was the only one in my book club who voted for 'The Name of the Wind' over 'The Way of Kings' for our fantasy pick back in March. Everyone else was hyping Sanderson's worldbuilding and complex magic systems, but I pushed for Rothfuss because I think character voice matters more than plot scope. We ended up reading 'The Name of the Wind' and three people quit halfway through, complaining nothing happens. Tbh, I still think it was the better choice for the writing style alone, but now I'm stuck defending a book with no sequel in sight. Has anyone else had a book club pick where you were the sole dissenter and it went south?

Had a reader tell me my secondary character was too perfect, now I rewrite every side character with at least one flaw first.

She said in our book club that my hero's best friend never made a real mistake and it made him feel like a cardboard cutout, so now I run every new side character through a 'what's their biggest screw up' checklist before I even start writing a scene - has anyone else had feedback that forced you to totally rework your approach to character building?

Got our book club to finally stop talking over each other with one simple rule change

My book club in Austin had this problem where we'd spend 45 minutes debating the same character's motives while skipping half the discussion questions. Last month I tried something different after reading about it online. Instead of letting anyone jump in whenever, we started each meeting with 5 minutes of silent writing time where everyone jots down their top 3 thoughts about the book. Then we go around the circle and each person shares one thought before anyone can respond. It felt super awkward at first, like we were back in 3rd grade. But somehow it cut our arguments in half and we actually finished all our discussion points for once. The quiet people finally got to talk without being interrupted. Has anyone else tried a speaking order or writing exercise to calm down their group?

Hot take: My book club finally stopped hating on genre fiction after one conversation

For like 8 months straight our group only read literary novels. Classics, award winners, all that. Nobody said it out loud but we were all getting bored. Last month I brought up The Martian by Andy Weir as a joke suggestion. One of the members who always pushed for the serious stuff actually said 'fine let's try it' just to shut me up. We read it in two weeks instead of the usual month. The discussion was way more lively than anything we'd had before. People were arguing about the science, laughing about jokes, actually finishing the book. Now we're rotating between genres every other pick. Has anyone else seen their group open up like this after sticking to one thing for too long?
