In my thriller book club in Denver, someone said the middle chapters feel like a treadmill when the author repeats the same doubt beat three times. I argued that built tension, but then I re-read the section and yeah, it was just spinning wheels. Has anyone else found that cutting a single repetitive scene changes the whole feel of a novel?

My book club split over a 647-page biography we couldn't finish

Last month our group in Portland picked a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt for the monthly pick, and by week 3 only 4 of 11 people had made it past page 200. The debate got heated because some wanted to ditch it for a shorter book mid-month while others said quitting was lazy. I'm leaning toward a rule that any book over 500 pages needs a two-thirds vote to even get on the list. Has anyone else had a club implode over length like this, or do you just accept the drop-off?

Our group voted last spring to ban any spoilers for the first 50 pages, thinking it would keep discussions fresh. My friend Dana pushed for it hard, saying it made meetings more fun. Book club debates got softer in 15 years, or did we?

Back in 2008 my group in Tulsa spent three whole meetings fighting over whether the unreliable narrator in the novel was lazy writing or a genius trick, people nearly quit over it. Now the same group just nods along to anything, even when the plot holes are obvious, because nobody wants to hurt feelings. Is it just my group that turned into a safe space, or did book clubs lose their edge everywhere?

That Book Club moderator from 2018 was right about reading order

Back when we did the Broken Earth trilogy, our moderator insisted we read the short stories set in the same world before book three. I fought it hard, said it was a waste of time and we should just plow through. Turned out she was completely right, those stories explain a lot about the guardians and the moon stuff that made the ending click. Has anyone else had a moderator or member push a reading order that actually saved the whole discussion? We argued about it for 20 minutes before giving in.

Why do book clubs always skip the controversial chapters?

I've been in the same club in Portland for 3 years now. Every single time we hit a chapter with something ugly, like racism or abuse, someone says "let's focus on the writing style instead." Last month we read a novel where the main character did something truly awful, and the whole room just went quiet. One lady literally said "I don't think we need to dwell on that." But that IS the book we all agreed to read. So we ended up talking about the cover art for 20 minutes. Has anyone else noticed this pattern? How do you get a group to actually wrestle with the hard parts without making everyone mad?

That reread of a classic I hated in high school actually hit different

I avoided 1984 for 15 years because I slogged through it as a sophomore and thought it was boring. Last month my book club picked it and I almost skipped the meeting. Ended up reading it in two sittings and I couldnt believe how much I missed the first time. The parts about language and control felt way more real now that I follow the news daily. Do you guys ever give a book a second shot way later and flip your whole opinion?

Hit 150 books in our club's spreadsheet, then noticed a pattern

I was tallying our monthly picks and saw we've read 150 books since 2021, but 64 of them were from the same 5 authors... that kind of shocked me. Has anyone else's club fallen into a comfort zone like that, and how do you break out of it without starting a fight?

Last month at our Powell's meetup, one member called The Ministry for the Future "boring" and gave it 3 stars. Hit 500 book club meetings and nobody checked the count

I keep a tally in my planner for our neighborhood book club, just for fun. Last Tuesday we hit meeting number 500, which works out to about 96 books if you count the rereads and the one month we did two graphic novels. I announced it while passing the snack plate and Karen goes, 'Is that like a calorie count or something?' Nobody clapped or cared, but my tally sheet has coffee stains on three different pages and that's my real trophy. Has anyone else hit a random milestone that felt way bigger to you than to the group?

Our book club split over whether the narrator was the villain, and it got heated

We meet at the public library downtown every 3rd Thursday, and last month I brought up that everyone in the group loved the ending of The Last House on Needless Street except me. I said the twist felt cheap, that the real horror was the animal abuse being brushed aside for a shocker. TIL our book club's meeting spot is gone, replaced by a vape shop

Honestly, I drove by the old library annex on 3rd street last week and it's a vape shop now. Our club met there every other Thursday for like 7 years, since 2016, and we argued about everything from plot holes to whether the author's ending was fair. I walked in just to see, and the back room where we jammed 12 chairs around that folding table is now storage for boxes of flavored e-liquid. It hit me that we don't even have a new spot yet, we've been doing Zoom since 2022. Has anyone else lost their usual meeting place and struggled to find a good replacement that doesn't feel weird?

Our book club had to pick between two endings for the same novel

Last month we read a book that had an alternate ending published online. Half the group wanted to discuss the official ending and half wanted the alternate one. We ended up voting on it and the alternate won by 2 votes. The debate got SO heated that we spent 45 minutes arguing about which ending was more true to the characters. I was at the Mill Creek library last month picking up my hold. Two librarians were talking at the desk. One said that exact thing. She said if everyone agrees the book was great, there's nothing to talk about. I used to pick books that were safe. Stuff everyone would like. Tried the "read the last chapter first" trick for a dense nonfiction book and it actually saved me

My book club picked a 400 page book on economic theory last month and I was dreading it. Usually I slog through and retain almost nothing. On a whim I flipped to the final chapter before starting. It gave me the big picture argument and then everything else in the first 12 chapters made way more sense as supporting points. First time I actually finished one of these dense picks early. Anyone else use a weird reading order that helped?

Rant: That one guy in book club who told me I "read wrong" still bothers me 4 years later

It was at a meeting for a sci-fi novel, I think we were discussing Dune. I mentioned how I skim the descriptive parts of landscapes and focus on dialogue and action. This older dude across the table just stares at me and says "You're missing the whole point of reading." Like, what even is that? I've finished like 80 books since then and I remember the plots just fine. Why do people gatekeep how you enjoy a story? Has anyone else had someone tell you your reading style is wrong?

Paid $45 for a "rare" first edition at a garage sale turned out to be a book club reprint

Got all excited last Saturday thinking I scored big on this old sci fi novel. Dude was asking $60 but I talked him down to $45 cause the dust jacket had a small tear. Got home and looked up the publishing info inside and it's not a true first edition at all. Just a cheaper book club version from the 70s. Worth maybe $5. Feel like a total idiot. Anyone else get burned on a deal like this?
